How We'd Like To Help This Year
Written by
We try to deliver original, insightful content every week, and then about once per quarter a self-serving update. So here goes the self-serving one about how we might help you in the new year.
Five Legs of Our Stool
We essentially do five things, listed here in random order:
- Merger/Acquisition Guidance
- Advice to principals on how to run their firms.
- A select few in-person events.
- Books.
- Podcast.
Here’s a bit more detail on each.
Merger/Acquisition Guidance
Jonathan is the Practice Lead over this area, and this includes:
- Valuations. ($5k)
- Buy- and sell-side searches to find a buyer or seller, and then negotiating the transaction on your behalf. (Sliding scale)
- Evaluation/negotiation of a deal you are already considering, where the buyer or seller is already in hand. (Varies)
- Internal transfer in which you sell the firm to an existing employee(s). ($20k)
- “Prep for Sale” program that includes a benchmarking, a valuation, and a plan for the most likely transfer scenario. ($12k)
- Database of eventual sellers. You let us know if you’d like to be considered in the future if we are engaged by a buyer who may be looking for a firm like yours. (Free)
Consulting Advice to Principals
David is the Practice Lead over this area, and while some programs are tailored, there are primarily two packages that comprise 95% of the work.
- New Business Audit, a three-module program that address your positioning, your service offering design, and your lead generation plan. ($18k)
- Total Business Reset, a six-module program that starts with a benchmarking, moves to the same three modules listed above (positioning, service offerings, lead gen), then tackles roles and structure and processes and people, and finally closes with some future proofing to prepare for your next steps, including a possible exit. ($25k for most firms)
In-Person Events
Each of these events is typically held yearly, in Atlanta, at a brewery:
- Mind Your Own Business conference, our largest, with 100+ people. This features a dozen other speakers in a mix of breakouts and keynotes, supplemented with attendee-led roundtables. Next, likely Spring, 2026. 3 days
- Benchmarking Your Practice, covering how to measure how your firm is doing and fix any gaps. Early 2025 1 day
- Pipeline Kickstarter, to deal with everything related to new business. January. 2 days
- Succession Planning & Your Exit via Internal Transfer or M/A. 2 days
- Leading Your Firm’s Growth w/ Account Management. Fall. 2 days
Please visit our Event listing for the most current information.
Books
The first one listed here is addressed specifically to this market (advertising, design, digital, dev shops, comms, etc.), and the rest are addressed to the broader professional services space. All of these are fully illustrated:
- Financial Benchmarking of a Marketing Firm. Originally released in 2010, and fully updated in 2022. (Printed notebook and PDF)
- The Business of Expertise: How Entrepreneurial Experts Convert Insight to Impact + Wealth. 2018 (Hardback, Audiobook, Kindle)
- Secret Tradecraft of Elite Advisors: Covert Techniques for a Remarkable Practice. 2023 (Paperback, Audiobook, Kindle)
- Selling Your Professional Service Firm: A Primer. 2024 (Paperback, Audiobook, Kindle)
Podcast
David co-hosts the 2Bobs podcast with Blair Enns (of Win Without Pitching). The first episode was released in early 2017, and new episodes have been continuously released every other Wednesday morning. Each episode is an alternating, subject-specific interview of the other person on a topic of interest. The episodes are usually 30 mins, and there are no sponsors or advertising. It is by far the largest podcast in the entrepreneurial creative space, with more than 200 episodes and counting.
